For anyone who has lost a cat, rely on sense of smell to bring them back. We tried everything, then, yesterday, I cooked some turkey that was bad, the odor was terrible. I opened to doors to get rid of the smell and disposed of it in the backyard. within about 2 hours, marshmallow found his way home---coincidence, perhaps? But perhaps he followed the scent!

Cats loooooooove turkey innards, so don't take it personally but he might've been drawn to that at first - then been like, "Hey, wait a sec, this is where I live!" Maybe you've stumbled on a secret to draw wayward pets home, ya think?
I noticed in this thread and also in the one about Mike (RIP) that you mention your son had a part in the sagas of each cat. You've got yourself a Dr Doolittle there.
It's high time you send some pics over to his former mom, maybe leaving out some "minor" details about what's transpired since he got rehomed.
Also, I second the suggestion to retrace your steps taken during the search. Remove flyers, phone in to shelters, etc. And by all means close that findmydoggie.com-or-whatever account. Whenever you're dealing with people directly, let them know why the search has been called off. Often they're never the wiser, and you'll make that many more folks happy to know how this story played out.
Now we can all redouble our mojo towards getting Little Moo back where she belongs.
Just when I'd given up hope, he came in the backyard. My son found him and coaxed him in.
He's even in great condition, he was obviously kept inside somewhere, his coat is clean, no dirt, a little hungry, but not ravenous, he's a little thinner, but not too much.
Someone took him in, then released him, this is not a cat who's spent the last week in the woods!
Tonight is going way below freezing, to 18 and lower. I was so worried. But he came home! Hurray!
I'm glad he is home. I know what that feels like. My Little Bit got out several months ago and was gone a couple of days and I was sick with worry. He came back too and I was so happy.
I spent the morning taking down our posters, thankfully people did not take them down, even though a few were probably put in places they shouldn't be, like on private fences, etc.
There's only so much room on bulletin boards, give the room to someone else, there's a lot of lost pets in this area.
I'm trying to post some pictures, but I'm not very "camera adept" will get my dh to help when he comes home.
Marshmallow is curled up at my feet right now, all's content in his world! He is turning into a lapbaby, want's held constantly, he's been through a lot, now just wants his mommie.
But yes, I am retracing my steps to let people know to stop looking for him, I'm grateful to all those who helped look, we even had a lawn service looking for him!
A while back, someone in my neighborhood put up 'Found my cat, thanks for all the help folks!' signs after having the lost cat signs up for a couple weeks previous. As someone who saw the original flyers in about ten different places when I was out running, it was actually rather nice to hear about a happy ending in that case.
