Hi everyone,

We have a 10 month old ragdoll kitten who has slowly lost the use of his legs over the course of the last 10 days. It started out with his back end being weak and him not jumping up anymore. It then progressed to a funny walk, then no walk, only sitting. He can no longer sit and can only roll himself over. He has been to the vet, we've done x-rays, bloodwork, accupuncture, chiropractic treatment and metacam. He is still peeing and having bowel movements although he can no longer sit up to do them. He is eating and drinking. He is bright and alert and very aware. He does not seem to be in any pain. Our vet says she's never seen anything like this, does anyone out there have any ideas? He can't live like this to much longer.

Thanks
Flurry

Wow... was it after kitty was put "under" for a surgery or something...???

I have no idea what else it could be but yeah, how could a kitty live like that...
I am sorry. The vet doesn't have a clue huh? sounds so crazy.
Hope there is some sort of answer for you soon.

my kitten was found at about 8 weeks old.
He had gotten his shots and all that.
His last shots were given around the 16th week.
He started walking slow and I asked the vet and he said he was just a little sore.
Two days later I came home and he was dragging his bottom half.

I went to a specialist after going to two vets that were open that morning. None xrayed, did some tests and had no clue.

The expert that I visited did the xray. He said the kitten appeared to have a viral tumor and it woke up and ate two of his bones away in his back. Nothing could be done. I thought it was the shots personally and I never saw the xrays. I had to let him go. I held him in my arms and we let him go.

Go to a specialist in your area at once and see if he can be saved. The doctor should have been able to tell you something after all that, especially he xrays.

Do not wait as if it is a virus or something it could affect other pets. I wish you all the luck and hope in the world.

Definitely go to a specialist! I'm surprised that the vet didn't suggest a specialist when she didn't know what to do.

Is there a veterinary school in your area? They might be able to examine your cat.

Time to see another vet...It could be so many things...Spinal Cord disease of some kind, ruptured disc,Arterial Thromboembolism (nerve injuries),spondylitis(which are spurs of calcium that develop on the backbones and put pressure on the nerves),or it could be an infection of some kind...the list goes on.
I have 3 Raggies myself...gentle hugs to your little one.

I'm sorry your cat is ill. Best to you and your family, and to the cat as well.

Is your kitten a manx? (no tail or shortened tail)

Manx cats are more likely to suffer from spina bifida, which could explain the loss of motor function.
