"Thousands of dollars" ?? First I would definitely get another vet whose wallet is not glued to his head.
You beat me to it. Check around your area, make some calls. Even if you have to drive a ways, it might be worth it. This is only if you decide to have the surgery. Catsmom's and all the other's advice is right on about your cat's ability to handle all that's involved and her quality of life.
Thanks all. I don't think she'd do well with surgery and missing a leg. I've seen two vets who both want serious money to have it removed. I have one more vet scheduled.
So far they all want thousands of dollars to perform it.
Cats do well on three legs. But for an older cat I'd be worried about the cancer spreading. Might be best to treat the cat medically for as long as possible and let nature take its course.
We had the same situation, & decided to get the leg amputated. But poor cat was dead within 3 months anyhow, as the cancer had spread. I would not do it again. Of course, her cancer was very aggressive, & I feel that vet was more interested in making money, than the cats quality of life. She did Ok on 3 legs, we made the litter pan out of a cookie sheet, so did not have to climb into it. But proceed with caution, find out how aggressive the cancer is, & if it has already spread, I would not do the operation. I miss that girl, she was my warrior princess.
