Today both the New York State Senate and the Assembly voted (by "overwhelming majority") to pass legislation to ban declawing cats into law. Next step is the governor's signature. This is HUGE and a culmination of many years of hard work by The Paw Project and of course us little people too.

Five other states in the US have legislation in process: New Jersey (which passed it's first assembly vote by a large majority 2 years ago but has stalled since then), Rhode Island, West Virginia, Massachusetts and California.

7 provinces in Canada have now banned declawing in the past 18 months. Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, Alberta, New Brunswick (effective July 2019) and Manitoba. In Canada, each province has their Veterinary Medical Association and all practicing vets are required to belong and adhere to all regulations once voted on and passed. What this means is these bans were decided BY the veterinarians. This also is huge, that vets are finally saying NO.

Also in Canada, last year VCA Canada, a veterinary chain, stopped declawing cats. (VCA US still declaws)

Find out what you can do in your state to get the ball moving. Contact The Paw Project.

Yes, my state of New York finally came through! With the help of Ally Cat Allies I sent out letters to my representatives thinking it was another waste of time, but I did it anyway and much to my surprise it passed legislation.

Wonderful news!!! I hope more are going to follow. Most people really don’t know better though and have no idea what declawing means. And vets still seem to recommend it as a standard procedure. Just terrible.

Great news!

There is a thread on this in the Politics and Other Controversies section ... with some people who just refuse to understand.

Best news I've heard in a long time. The dominoes are finally starting to fall.

Thank you CM for the update.

That's great news!

I just adopted a cat from my local rescue. Poor guy - he has been declawed.

3 of the 4 cats that I have adopted from rescue were declawed. Poor babies.

Thanks. It's pretty clear those who are arguing against the proposed new law don't really care about cats' welfare, just want someway to justify their cruelty and laziness.

It seems to me there's one person arguing and they just like to argue.

I wish they wouldn't de-claw in my area. When I first got here and looked for a vet, I was horrified to find they all de-claw. Considering the amount of outdoor cats and working (barn) cats, I was surprised.

Well he has given me ample opportunity to present the factual information about declawing, at least. lol
