I am not a witch (well, depending on whom you ask ) and husband is not a warlock, but we've had several black cats over the years. All were rescues and all were wonderful, loving cats.
I have heard that when it comes to being adopted, black cats tend to be at the bottom of the list. I have one and am fostering another but so far, no takers on the adopter side (but it is only the end of the first weekend).
I'm a witch of a sort, a good witch (I'll have to add Glenda to my list of potential names), as I have often said about my surrounding forest.
So is it the mystics that go for black cats?
I have had mostly black cats my entire life. The cat we had when I was a kid was black, adopted by my younger brother. He is in no way a witch. I've had 6 black cats out of all of the cats I've had in my life. Not once did I get them because of some mystic thing. I got them because they needed a home.
Black cats do get looked over due to superstition with some people. Both black cats and dogs don't do as well with online adoptions as they are hard to photograph.
I like all types of cats. I do favor the black ones a bit. I agree with others that black cats are so sleek and lithe looking and remind me of mini panthers.

Halloween is my favorite holiday It's just a FUN day to enjoy costumes, trick-or-treaters and parties; no stress of visiting relatives or buying presents. Halloween does make me think of black cats more. I have had two and currently have a black kitten. The kill shelters were overloaded in the fall and I couldn't resist. She was found along a road at 8 weeks and really needed a home.
I love our little black dumpling, although she runs hot/cold in temperament - turns out, black fur is the recessive gene of a Siamese, according to her vet. That explains it all!
Black cats (and dogs!) are typically adopted last. They're seen as bad luck, scarier, or generally less desirable.

I know that there are some shelters that offer incentives around Halloween to adopt black cats. I'm not sure if they do it for dogs. Anyhow, we did adopt a black Lab. He's now up on the couch with me. I love it when they keep my feet warm

I agree - my black cat has the head of a Siamese and has the slanted eyes. She also has the meow of a Siamese. Thankfully she doesn't meow when I'm sleeping. From being a stray who hissed at me when I came near her to put her food down she has become a lovebug.

That's a very bad idea. The shelters I know won't adopt out a black cat around Halloween. It's not a great thing to be adopted by someone who wants you as a token of a holiday devoted to demons, bad witches and the dead.
It also puts the cat at risk of being sacrificed and or tortured in some kind of cult ritual by nut jobs on that day. If you care about your black cat, keep it in indoors for at least a week before Halloween and a week afterward.
I agree - the shelters where I live won't adopt out any black cats around the time of Halloween.
