Unfortunately, after my research I have found that Fancy Feast is pretty high in phosphorus, so, for my situation, not a great option.

Before her diagnosis, FF was her jam.

My last cat had CKD. We tried the Hills wet diet and regular canned food. A CBC panel was done for both and the numbers for both were similar. In other words, my cat's kidneys were doing well as if he ate only the regular canned food.

It is a personal choice but imo I would give your cat whatever he wants to eat - canned food only. Grain free canned like Wellness Core is great and about as affordable as Hills, but with more named meats. As he begin to lose his appetite, you will have to be more open with giving him something to eat rather than nothing.

Having your cat diagnosed with such disease is heartbreaking but at this stage, you should have plenty more time left. Most cats pass from other old age related issues rather than the kidneys failing. So while I understand the focus is proper feeding, don't forget to spoil him and cherish the time you have left with him. Mine passed at the age of 17, about 1-2 years since his diagnosis of Stage 1 or 2, and his last CBC showed his kidneys were still fine, he was dying due to old age.
