I took a tour to that area a couple of years ago and was quite impressed with the Lake Louise Lodge. The Hotel sits behind a glacier and a blue/green
lake. The water there looks at times like lime. Its very upscale and the dining room serves deer, bear, moose, etc. Its in a very remote place. We took a tour up to the Icefields Parkway to get a close look at the glaciers. They will allow you to stop to take the walking trails. The wildlife is awesome as well as the scenery. If you are going in October I would assume it will be snowing.
We were there in early September and it started snowing on the way down the mountain to the Calgary airport. Not to worry, the people up there handle the snow very well and it never bothers them. This was an unforgettable experience. Also, there is a train that goes through the town. Its so remote I don't know where it goes. The town is small but I'm sure the locals will have something for you to do there for several days.
Make sure you make it over to Moraine Lake, a short drive from LL. It is stunning, even moreso (in my opinion) than LL. If you want to splurge on dinner the Post Hotel is nice and does a good job. Also a trip to Banff may be nice, walk around town (many shops and such) and grab dinner. You could also hit the hot springs if that is your thing (Upper Hot Springs).
Don't forget to bring your woolies. The nights will be cold, near, or likely below freezing.
Where are you staying? If it's right at the Chateau, there's plenty to do in the hotel. Lake Louise is something of an anomoly, in that there isn't a whole lot right there, other than the hotels. Banff is about 30-45 minutes down the highway. Worth going on the Sulphur Mountain Gondola, and stopping at the Banff Springs. If you want the spiritual equivalent of food porn, go to the five diamond "Eden" at the Rimrock Hotel in Banff.
Moraine Lake access may be closed by then, but if not, it's worth the trip. I would go up to the Columbia Icefields for sure. Peyto Lake, Bow Glacier are on the way, and worth stopping at as well.
Thank you so much for your suggestions!! My husband and I can't wait!!!!
