Hello, I will be driving up rt 1 this summer, and wondering what things I shouldn't miss. What kind of hikes, historical things, natural features, and such should I not miss?

Morro Bay/Rock, Solvang for some tourist stuff, Jocko's in Nipomo for BEEF, Hearst Castle, San Luis Obispo has a cool little and a Spanish mission. Be sure to check out bubblegum alley. . Highway 154 north of Santa Barbara is a nice drive through the mountains past a big lake. I'm sure there's some hiking there. Of course there's Big Sur farther north. If you're into aviation at all, there's a little WW2 air museum in Camarillo, just a little inland from PCH. The Reagan library is not too far away in Simi Valley if you're into history.

When in doubt, pull over and have a look. Don't know where you're starting from and how far you plan on going, but you shouldn't take less than 3 days to see one of the coolest places in the world.

If you come to the end of the map, somewhere around Ferndale and the gas station guy tells you not to go any further on that little squiggley line on the map, listen to him. My husband and I drove and drove on this little what we thought was a road and ended up and the end of a high powered rifle in the middle of a pot growers forest. I am not sure we were even on a road after that but we blazed a trail back through the forest then a cow pasture and found the coast hwy 1 again.

I would file Carmel-By-The-Sea under "Can't Miss." Where are you starting from and where are you ending up?
