The reason is obvious, he is the unions puppet and does whatever they want. The cost per inmate in our prison is $85,00 while for a private prison is $31,000. The state union run prisons cost so much more because of fabulous pay for the union guards, benefits, and pensions. There is no hope for California.

Good riddance. Private prisons are an abomination, it's about as bad an idea as private utility companies or private fire departments.

Yeah I’d agree. I don’t have a problem with this.

Very true, private prisons and their lobby have cost untold billions of dollars and societal wreckage

Some things have no business being private and / or for-profit. Prison is absolutely one of those things. It just makes the situation 10x worse.

I guess you guys don't mind paying $85,000 vs $31,000 per prisoner. I do.
Your paying more than that, you pay for these guards lavish pensions for 30 years.
Do you live in a brand new house in a nice neighborhood and have a new expensive car? Your paying for them to have that.

Well I, speaking for myself, appreciate that you personally are putting out these billions of dollars, Vega. Kudos!

Private prisons cherry pick the inmates they will house, they usually only accept younger non-violent offenders without medical problems. If all the inmates in California were healthy young non-violent offenders it would be much cheaper to house them than $85,000 a year.

A different take on private prisons/costs...

"The average cost of housing a medium security inmate in a public prison in 2010 was $48.42 compared to $53.02 in a private prison (Reason Foundation)." link.

"They (Private prisons) can accept or decline any offender they choose, and often choose to decline offenders who have medical conditions or mental health issues that make them costlier to house."

"The Justice Department concluded in a review that private prisons were more dangerous and less effective at reforming inmates than facilities run by the government, leading to policy changes under the Obama Administration to phase out private contracts. However, the Trump administration reversed this directive in 2017, instead opting for harsher immigration and drug policies."
