I need help finding the perfect California city for me. I would like to relocate to the West Coast after living my entire life in New York City. I am moving with my wife to start our lives together and raise a family; I know very little about the different California cities. Here are some things that are important to me: I would like a place that has 4 seasons, or atleast doesn't have similar weather all year round (I want winters to feel cool and summers to feel hot). I would like to be in a place where housing prices are not too high (I would like a nice 4 bedroom house for less than 500K). I want a small town feel, no big cities, no traffic and congestion. I want a place that is very green with hills and mountains.

All suggestions are very much appreciated!!!

Why do you want to relocate to the west coast (as opposed to the south, the north, Florida, etc.)? What was the source of information that led you to this desire?
What line of work are you in?
Where are you going to work?

Hmm good questions...I work in the field of finance (I currently take the train/subway to work every day in downtown Manhattan). If I move to Cali I will be able to work from my home. I want to move to the west coast because I do not like the fast pace of NY and want something more low key. Also, I have some family around the LA area so it would be nice to be able to drive to them (but I dont want to live in LA, its just like NY. I want something small, quaint, low key, etc.)

I think I would like to be somewhere in the area between Bakersfield and Santa Clarita. Any towns/cities that you would suggest that meet some of my criterias?

That was my first thought... also the Sierra foothills are nice, like Chico, Yuba county, Jackson/Sutter Creek, Sonora, etc. I used to live in South Lake Tahoe, and really loved it there - prices have gone up since, but are still fairly "affordable" by CA standards.

Oh, then I guess Tahoe wouldn't be the right location! I don't know much about the Bakersfield area, but Big Bear City/Lake (kinda far east of the towns you mentioned) is a nice place... I also like San Luis Obispo, which might be too far north for you. But if you're looking for "four seasons," don't count on getting it anywhere near Bakersfield - gotta hit the mountains or northern CA for that.
