Wow I thought for sure California would be the worst when it comes to homelessness. I was wrong. I just found this study on the internet that ranks all the states by it's homeless rate (homeless people divided by total population). California was in the top 10 but not the absolute worst. Here's what I found.

State Homeless Rate per 10,000 population
1. Hawaii 48.7
2. New York 40.8
3. Nevada 37.2
4. Massachusetts 31.5
5. Oregon 30.6
6. California 29.4
7. Washington 26.1
8. Vermont 24.9
9. Alaska 24.2
10. Florida 20.9

California was #6 in it's homeless rate.

Numerically, we by far have the most though, and the most visible. In NYC I saw homeless in Manhattan, in Hawaii you see them on the beach, Portland/Seattle you see them downtown. In LA they're in Hollywood, all throughout the Westside, in Venice, Santa Monica, and eventually when Skid Row completely disappears due to gentrification it will be worse. I would rather there be one cluster downtown then having to see them everywhere. In SF it's even worse they are everywhere, you see just as many homeless as fire hydrants.

This is misleading.. No way in hell does MA have more than CA or OR.. no no no. And if they do have homeless in MA, they house them a lot better or you only see them in downtown begging. They are not by any means everywhere though.

According to a HUD study:

"States with high and low homeless rates are all over the country. The highest rates of homelessness among states are in Hawaii (465 per 100,000), followed by New York (399) and California (367).

The lowest homeless counts per capita come in Mississippi (81 per 100,000), Indiana (94) and Kansas (94)."

Yep, San Francisco is BAD!. San Diego isn't much better. You see them way out in the residential areas at busy intersections with signs. You see them in many suburbs in much the way way. Both San Francisco and San Diego have areas where they concentrate services for the homeless but the numbers are just that high.

Mississippi is so poor they probably have a hard time determining where to draw the line.

In Seattle, they're out in some of the neighborhoods, as well. They live in neighborhood parks, and tend to congregate around the university, as well as in various parts of downtown.

Seattle is pretty bad but I'd say it's a step better than San Diego even.

Californias population is much bigger than most states (or all states?) so they have must have more homeless people by definition.
