Ok, so here is my sad story. I acquired a non running 93 Suzuki 350 dirt bike in January 2012. I wander down to my local DMV to register it, and am told, that since it had not had registration renewal since 2008 I was responsible for all fees, to the tune of 685.00 bucks.

Now someone could say, that is what you get for living in California, which would be cute, but I betcha CA is not the Lone Ranger on this.

So my question to the worldly wise mature denizens here, any way to beat that?

Yes with your debit card. Sometimes you just have to pay.

Could the previous owner file non-op retroactively?

Then he would be on the hook for the past 3 years. He won't do that....

I would try to negotiate the fee down if the bike is worth it. Argue from the point of it being in non operational status.

I did this for an old junker I picked up as a job site truck. Person hadn't paid the fees in about five years. Got it reduced to one year in back fees.

However this was in 2007 before the state was in a financial crunch.

I tried that, I will try that again at a different office, if nothing else works.

I see the PNO fee is only $18.00 per year, might be worth checking into. Vehicle Registration and Vessel Fees

Can't file a PNO until all due fees are paid..... I thought I could do that this am, but DMV won't go for it.

I can do that, I actually was planning to file an PNO but run the bike on the dirt once I rebuilt it. But, since all fees must be paid prior to PNO I either must ignore the DMV until the bike falls off the computer, or go legit.
