I don't think anybody in their right mind expects "beach front" property on a middle class income.....but maybe a modest house inland. Things have always been more expensive in Cali..true...but not this out of whack.

I got what I paid for in Texas (the cheaper place you speak of so often Sheri).... a great house I can pay off in a few more years...peace of mind....savings in the bank ....early retirement.....lots of vacations....works for me.

I really miss California. I was born and raised there, and although I didn't appreciate it at the time, I have since realized how magical the place is. It still has so much opportunity, and almost everyday I have some kind of fond memory or thought of going back.

Then again, I wasn't supporting myself out there...buty as a kid, I'm not sure I could think of a better place to grow up.

After reading the article,it makes me wonder why so many people try and put all of California into the same box.

I live in an Affordable and Sparsely Populated Area, and Surprise it's in California and no I don't live in the Ghetto.

The California Dream still exist, but when people want to live in the Very Desirable Parts of this State of course their will be a High Price Tag attached to it,and this isn't just a California Phenomenon, but it's happening all over the Country.

California is still a Wonderful Place despite the problems we face here

The California Dream is alive and I am living it. I live in 2 very expensive areas, but I have worked my but off for everything I have.

I once had 100 dollars to my name and I had to leave this state, regroup and 8 years later I am back living amongst opportunity around each corner.

There is just no other state in the US like California, the dream is never more vivid than today.

Love where you live.

It's not just California, it's also New York. Most people I went to high school with have to either move into the city and rent an apartment, or move out of this area.

No one my age can buy a house here unless they are a doctor, lawyer, or other rich job title or win the lottery.

It's a shame.

It's 2008. 1970 is now almost 40 years ago. It's time to move on.

You sound like affordable housing is a bad thing.

It's a great thing. While we're dreaming, I'd also like a pony.

What a great attitude. California will be a wonderful place when only the top 5% of income earners can afford to buy a house and the other 95% rent apartments their entire lives or live 3 families to a house.
