California Senate tells motorcyclists to pipe down

California Senate tells motorcyclists to pipe down | Greenspace | Los Angeles Times

"SB 435, also known as the Motorcycle Anti-Tampering Act, gives law enforcement officials the ability to cite noise pollution violations under the California Vehicle Code, reinforcing a 27-year-old federal regulation that is rarely enforced.

Under the proposed law, motorcyclists pulled over for other traffic violations could also be cited for illegally noisy exhaust pipes and fined $50 to $100 for a first violation -- a fix-it ticket that could be dismissed with a proof of correction. Subsequent offenses would result in fines of $100 to $250. The bill, which has also passed the Assembly, is headed for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to sign. It would apply to motorcycles and after-market parts from the 2013 model year forward."

"According to the Air Resources Board, which backed the smog-check version of SB 435, motorcycles account for less than 1% of vehicle-miles traveled in the state yet account for 10% of passenger vehicles' smog-forming emissions; swapping a compliant tailpipe equipped with a catalytic converter for one without emissions controls can emit as many as 10 times more smog-forming pollutants per mile."
ONLY if the Law gives a set noise level (DBa, not just the officers opinion, which they have for cars) and definitely not if it makes aftermarket exhaust systems illegal. Many aftermarket systems improve efficiency and emissions.

Now that is a sound that I can't stand. Fail to see how a big old base that shakes the car and those around that car is cool. Many times it is more of a rattling sound like some part of the car is loose inside.

I don't care how loud your car is as long as it doesn't bother me, or if your "music" is loud it doesn't keep me from hearing my music.
The hearing aid industry lobbies against such a regulation for Booming Radios. They have millions of future customer driving around now.

Isn't that the way it goes? We had a good thing going with aftermarket exhausts. Then a few a-holes had to abuse the privilege, then it gets withdrawn for everybody.

No kidding! We already had 27150 & 27151 vc to enforce modifying exhaust systems to amplify sound emitted but it was OK with aftermarket pipes that were not extremely loud.
Then they come up with SB 435 which states you cannot install ANY aftermarket pipes regardless which seems to go against people's so-called freedom. The exhaust has to be DOT/DMV approved! What a joke!
More ways to get more money from vendors!

I ride a motorcycle and it is not loud.

I find the really loud motorcycles to be just as obnoxious as boom box cars and some are worse
