The Peace Bridge that connects Buffalo to Canda - the second most traveled border crossing in the nation, is getting a "Wow Factore" and a nice spruce up.
So, because we can't get a bridge in the near future, the Public Bridge Authority has taken the initiative to soon install a dynamic lighting effect to the existing brige. It is a dramatic, state-of-the-art, $1.2 million LED lighting system that will replace the current avian unfriendly up-lighting. The ‘Wow Factor’ will consist of 300 fixtures, turning the Peace Bridge into a spectacular iconic presence along the Niagara River.
This type of LED lighting adheres to the environmental Black Light Policy that mandates guidelines for structural lighting features. Instead of flooding high wattage lights up unto the night sky, the bridge will soon be wrapped in vibrant colors. With the flip of a switch, the colors can change from red to blue… or orange. The lighting can change with the seasons, or even with an event, such as a Buffalo Bills’ win or any of the Canadian/American holidays. Other than being aesthetically pleasing, the energy and operating costs will be much lower. There will also be reduced maintenance costs and built in security features, as the entire bridge will be bathed in light. Indirect lighting will be used to illuminate the upper bridge's truss beams.
The LED lighting effect is scheduled to be operational in time for the upcoming Holiday Season.
This will be a great addition to our evolving citiscape, and with its proximity to Downtown Buffalo, you can only imagine what pictures soon will look like from Canada looking toward the Buffalo skyline with the beautiful colored Peace Bridge at night. Wow, that will be one fantastic scene for sure.
The Peace Bridge lights are currently being tested. It's absolutely beautiful! Check out this link to some of the photo shots of the bridge and the new LED lighting system: Sneak peek at new Peace Bridge lights | WIVB.com - Be sure to see all photos for all of the many colors the Peace Bridge will have!
The LED Lighting system should be permanently set around the first or second week in May. There will be a light show ceremony that day.

This is a pretty large victory for Buffalo. Considering the fact that we won't be getting a new bridge anytime soon, it is key to spruce up existing bridges like the Peace Bridge. This will definately improve visitor's appreciation and view of Buffalo and WNY in general. - That we are beginning to show signs of progression.
UPDATE!!! The light show for the official start of the Peace Bridge lights is on May 13th, with a grand light show featuring the new LED state-of-the-art lighting system on the Peace Bridge. Be there along with myself by 9:45, with the light show at 10pm.

It will make a great statement for all who cross it every night. Buffalo is the City of Light, and this will be a fantastic addition to that name. I'm especially excited for Bills/Sabres season when the lights will be on according to what home team is playing (probably just the big games), and the many holidays we can see it light-up.
This is a great win for the city, even if at $1million, it will pay off in the end, especially with new impressions that Buffalo is moving forward with new, innovative thinking never experienced before since the Pan Am.
I think a million dollars is outrageous. That could fund a lot more useful stuff. Anyway...whatever, no bridge...they might as well do something
