I've been hearing about people taking what they can use from the two and putting it into practice. I've seen a few books putting their teachings side by side and the meanings are very similar. I'm talking about buddhists studying gospel and christians using insight meditation, etc.. I'm not too familiar with this , but curious.

If anyone's seen this in their community or has first hand knowledge I'd like to hear more or a book recommendation or something.

I'm sure many christians and buddhists feel that the two teachers are incompatible but if I took their teachings in a literal fundamental way I wouldn't be posting this so save it.

There are Christians who practice Buddhism, but not vice versa. I assume this is because Buddhism is not a religion in the sense of having a deity who is worshipped so there is no essential conflict. In fact, my Presbyterian minister used to practice zen meditation at a local Zendo.

On the other hand, a Buddhist cannot do more than contemplate the teachings of Jesus -who might be considered a Bodhisattva- without just becoming a Christian (i.e. there would be no taking of communion or other Christian rituals that assume indoctrination into the Jesus cult).

Yes, I believe the teachings of Christ and those of the Buddha are quite similar. I have no difficulty following the teachings of both.

My favorite tee shirt reads "Kindness is my religion. -- The Dalai Lama". It could just as easily, IMO, have been signed by Jesus Christ.

I practice some of both, but I don't call myself either one. Deal with it, accept it, learn from it and move on. That's what both would do.

Maybe they're not Christians or at least not to the rest of Christianity but living a good life helping others is in line with what Jesus was about whether they follow all the rules or whatever.

Or maybe they practice Christianity as it was meant to be practiced, rather than the way church leaders tell us it should be practiced.

Or -- perhaps -- the Christ and the Buddha are one and the same.

I'm just saying, is all...

I would have to agree with you on that one Nighteyes...if you study them there are more similarities than not...similarities which just can't be side stepped away.
