Two years ago my DD rented a 2 BR apt. in Boulder for $900/m for a 9 mo. lease; it would have been $850 for a 12 mo.

It runs the gamut, but I'd say you can find something decent for around 1000.

If you want to be near Pearl Street /CU/downtown, it's probably more like $1500+.

Boulder is not that big. Unless it is very important to be within a couple of blocks of those places, you can find a decently priced rental, and be near these areas.

Would it be reasonable for a grad student to find a 2 BR to share with someone near the University for $1000 a month? My son is getting ready to apply to grad schools for fall of 2012, and there's a professor at UC in Boulder that he's met and is interested in working with, but when we looked around on craigslist it seemed like the rents were really high for a starving grad student's budget. (He would likely have a teaching asst., according to the professor.) He does have a car but would prefer to use his bike, walk, or take a bus to campus as much as possible.

Check out www.padmapper.com
It's a free tool to help find an apartment or sublet to rent. Basically, it's a big Google map with lots of house and apartment sublet and rental listings.
(Saw it mentioned in the Ft. Collins forum -- thanks for the link MFBE!)

My daughter rented a 2 BR in the Canyon Creek Apt. complex for $900/mo on a 9 mo lease; it would have been $850 for a one year lease. These weren't what you'd call "luxury" apts, but they were adequate and fairly close to campus. This was 4 years ago, so rents have likely risen, but $1000 would be in the ballpark. CU students also get an Eco-pass to use the bus system, so close to campus may not be *that* important.

Well, he's not real picky as long as the place is reasonably kept up and safe, so something like that sounds perfectly adequate. We used to live in Davis, CA, and the University there also has a deal so students ride the bus free, and I hadn't thought about that possibility. Thanks for the info!
