For just recreational reading, I really enjoy British mysteries....I enjoy Elizabeth George very much as well as PD James....have read all of their books and am in need of something new to read...Have read some Martha Grimes but...she just doesn't quite get there for me.....Anyone have any suggestions?

Have you tried any Dick Francis stories? they are all linked to the horse riding world (he was a jockey in the 60s and for a while he was riding the Queen's horses)
I remember reading quite a few of his books many years ago. They are light and entertaining though after a while the characters all seem the same.
I second Anne Perry and Alexander McCall Smith, especially the Isabel Dalhousie books.
I also loved the Maisie Dobbs mysteries by Jacqueline Winspeare. There are four or five books. They are set in England in the early 1930s.
It's not really a mystery, but more of a campy spy novel, but I also absolutely loved Olivia Joules and the Overactive Imagination by Helen Fielding. Lots of fun.
I've heard Ian Rankin is good also. I just bought one of his books today so I can't give any personal opinions but you might like to take a look
