Anyone else out there frustrated over the near impossibility of finding books by Harlan Ellison on the average bookstore shelves these days?

Ellison has never had a wide appeal.

I love his non-fiction stuff. The Glass Teat is one of the best commentaries on pop culture entertainment ever written.

I'm far less impressed with his fiction.

Did you know that The Terminator movie franchise owes its existence to Harlan Ellison sci-fi stories? Ellison was not a nice man, btw. Classic misanthrope. I've read his short story I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream posted online and his misanthropy is hideously evident in that story. Also, there was a computer game that was based on IHNMAMS.

I'm skeptical in the extreme. The Terminator bears only a very vague resemblance to the Ellison story in question (an old episode of The Outer Limits called "The Soldier"). Both stories involve a soldier going back in time. There, any resemblance ends.

But Ellison threw a fit about it, so the producers stuck a note into the credits to quieten him down.

I'm not a sci-fi fan, so I haven't read anything of his, but does anyone else think it's odd that there are two famous authors with the first name "Harlan" (Ellison and Coban)?

I mean, have you ever met a person in real life named "Harlan"?

As a writer who knows exactly what he is talking about in the video below, I find him to be delightful.

I love Harlan Ellison! Both the man and his books. And he was one heck of an anthology editor as well. If you listed the top 25 SF short stories, I bet five would be his.

I have an anthology of sci-fi short stories called "Alien Sex" and Harlan's story is heads and shoulders way above all the others in the collection...it made me seek out more by him. He's crusty and funny and very talented. Yes, I agree, pay the writer.

My sci-fi post-apocalyptic novel, Falling Through Time, was just published on Kindle. After working on the book for almost three years, yes, I very much understand "pay the writer." It's not the easiest way to earn a living. Good for Harlan for standing up for us all.

Is he still writing? Maybe his books are all out of print?

Yes, I met Harlan Ellison himslef. Does that count?

Regarding his books, I had his entire collection back in the 80's but they have kind of gone by the wayside. I wonder if Amazon can find them. I used to find them in a comic book or science fiction themed bookstore.
