Type "BMW Autobahn" on Youtube, and you'll find many videos showing BMWs at high speeds (legally) on the Autobahn.
I saw an M5 hit 300 kph, and a 760 hit over 275 kph.
Apparently BMWs are built for this.
Many cars can reach such speeds, but not for an extended period of time. BMW and Mercedes engineer their vehicles to maintain such speeds even though it is not practical unless for racing.
I've seen 140+ on US interstates. I ran with an M5 deep into the 125 range and he lifted, I didn't and saw 140 as I went by. New cars are ridiculously fast today. Newest M3 is 425 HP, twin turbo and simply pulls hard to 60, to 100, to 125 and beyond. Newest M5 is 600 HP.
Here is the M5 on the Autobahn. This one went "only" 135 mph. Built in speed-limiter options for the new M5 F90 are the standard 156 mph (250 kph) or 190 mph. Or you go to a third party tuner and have it completely removed--then it can go 200 mph.

When I lived there, my little '72 2002 Tii would do 200 KPH back and forth to work everyday. That was in the early '80s with no forced induction, no overdrive and a 10+ year old car.

I believe this is why Germany builds the best cars as they have to design them to run at high speeds for a while. A few months ago I was driving on the Autobahn and was passed by a Porsche Turbo that was going much faster than 150 mph. I own a BMW 228I and even that car will run over 150 mph with a 4 cylinder motor because it was designed to do it.

True that. My 525d has a 4-cylinder diesel and can go 155 mph as well.
Unlike most BMWs, Mercedes and Audi, Porsches have no factory-installed speed limiter at 155 mph. The 450hp 911 can go 190 mph.
By the way, I made a mistake in that video. I was following a 4 series gran coupe, not a 5 series, so it was an F36, not a G30. I changed the title but I can't retroactively change what I said in the video.
