Are we seeing the beginning of the end? Protective wrapping on utility poles being removed, Pahoa Village Rd being reopened Monday.

Puna lava flow breakouts less active, Pahoa Village Rd expected to reopen Monday

Updated: Nov 23, 2014 9:12 PM CST

Hawai'i County Civil Defense Director Darryl Oliveira and his team are going door-to-door along Pahoa Village Road letting residents know they're going to re-open the street as soon as crews finish removing the cinder piles surrounding the heat-protective wraps that were installed around the Hawaiian Telcom poles. They're expected to be finished by Monday, so officials are telling the families living there to prepare for the barricades at Post Office Road and Apa'a Street to come down sometime tomorrow afternoon.

[Original story]

Hawai'i County Civil Defense officials say Puna lava flow breakouts are still active approximately 3.6 miles upslope of Apa'a Street near the former geothermal well site, but are perhaps less active compared to the past few days. They say none of the activity poses an immediate threat to area residents.

USGS geologists with the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory say lava is flowing through the ground crack system where the breakouts are active upslope. They say they've been advancing northeast within the crack system and north along the western boundary of the original June 27th flow. USGS says there are no signs of surface-flow activity on the June 27th flow below the breakouts near the abandoned geothermal well site. They say webcam images indicate breakouts are also active upslope of the crack system. HVO scientists say by Thursday, the leading edge advanced about 0.3 miles northeast of the abandoned geothermal well site, and about 1.2 miles west of Ka'ohe Homesteads. They say by Friday morning, the flow had reached a ground crack -- the same ground crack which lava partially filled and flowed out of around September 6 -- about 0.2 miles north of the front as mapped on Thursday.

HVO geologists will conduct fieldwork Sunday on the lowermost breakouts. The next USGS overflight is scheduled for Monday, weather permitting.

Last Daily Civil Defense alert? - Is the show over? It sure seems like it. Another day of not much change with the lava flow, and all of it miles upslope. They started the process of reopening Pahoa Village Road today, and removing the piles of cinders and protective wrap around utility poles that were intended to prevent them from burning if surrounded by lava.

And today's alert finished with the note that: "Additional updates will be posted as conditions change."

From yesterday, "This afternoon there were lots of breakouts in the region of the distal crack(s) SW of Kaohe and close to the old well site. Today’s activity consisted of pāhoehoe flows that are expanding the margins of the crack flows and also feeding a series of pāhoehoe lobes and breakouts that are moving downslope along the western margin of the first Pāhoa flow. Burning vegetation and smoke marks the advance of the pāhoehoe flows in the rainforest. Upslope there were a few tiny breakouts above where the tube enters the crack system."

Good one, J...

Just in time for Thanksgiving, police reopened Pahoa Village Rd today. Although Officials warn that the flow could come back, nobody seems to rate that as a likely risk.

"USGS geologists with the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory say satellite observations over the past few days indicate the lava is advancing an average of about 275 yd/day both on top of and along the northwest margin of the original June 27th flow."

Eruption Information Update For Tuesday December 2nd At 8:45 AM

This is an eruption and lava flow update for Tuesday December 2nd at 8:45 AM.

This morning’s helicopter assessment shows that the new flow front continues to show signs of advancement and widening. The active flow front is located approximately 2.7 miles upslope of the Highway 130 and Pahoa Village Road intersection. The flow had advanced approximately 400 yards since yesterday. Current activity does not pose an immediate threat to area communities and Civil Defense and Hawaiian Volcano Observatory personnel are maintaining close observations of flow activity. Residents down slope will be kept informed of any changes in flow activity, advancement, and status.
