Hilo... rough... hahahahahahahahahah!!! Send her to the nearby surf spot Honoli'i, to get a tan, to swim, to learn to surf on a body board at the least, to meet the many kids who go there to do the same, make friends. Try Girl Scouts and other such organizations, FFA, etc... Volunteer at the zoo.

How old is your daughter? We will be moving to the Hilo/Puna area in a few months. My daughter is 13. Perhaps we could meet.

I guess in the interest of closing this thread, we never did find anything for her to do that was "cool" enough for her- basically kept her busy over the summer doing chores etc on our new homestead. And of course there was Facebook... When school started (and school starts early in Hawaii) the problem resolved itself.

Thanks for the update. Yes, keeping busy requires participation. Maybe your daughter having had some down time was good for her, just relaxing at home while trying to get geared up for school. I hope she is enjoying her new life in Hawaii.

Back to the "Compton" comment... is it really that extremely rough in Puna area for kids? Can anyone elaborate?

I lived in Hawaii for a few years as a kid but it was on Oahu. There was the local versus haole thing but for girls it was actually easier for the most part. I have two young boys and am very interested in this topic.

You can use the search feature, and learn a lot about the Puna area. Maybe you could then ask us some focused questions that we could help you with.

My bad I guess? I thought mine was a pretty specific question based on Whtviper1 post #17. Sorry I don't know how to paste previous posts- being a newbie on this forum.

It can be a rough area for everyone, not just limited to kids. A lot has to do with "where" in Puna. But there are many families that do fine there.
