Hi Everyone!

My family's moving to Bend in just a few more weeks - and we're SO excited! (and yes, we do have jobs lined up already).

So now we're searching through rental ads and there are SO many to choose from. We have found many that fit our needs, but they're scattered all over town.

Please respond with your opinion about which Bend elementary school/s you would be comfortable sending your children (or grandchildren) to... also, please let my know if there are any elementary schools you WOULDN'T want to send your children/grandchildren to... Thanks in advance for your honesty and opinions.

thank you for your thoughts and time!

Well, first of all, congrats on your move to Bend and landing jobs here! As someone who has subbed in several of the schools, as well as worked with many school groups who visited the place I worked, I would say most schools are very good. High Lakes Elementary always received praises, and it is an excellent school, however you will have to deal with crowding issues (although a new school opened to alleviate some of the problem). The schools with the biggest behavior problems in kids were probably Bear Creek, Juniper and Jewell Elem. I would concentrate on finding a home in the location you prefer and go from there.

In case you haven't found it, the Bend-LaPine School District has a map of the elem. schools and neighborhoods that go to which one. See the link below. The W.E. Miller Elem. School on the west side will open this fall. It was built mostly as the result of over-crowding at High Lakes, and many of the teachers came from High Lakes (which is highly rated and should be even better now that Miller is opening). It could be a good thing to go to a brand new school - everyone would be new. Another highly rated school is Elk Meadows. Bend also has some magnet schools which may be difficult to get into - Highland School at Kenwood is highly rated. I don't think you can go wrong with any elementary school here, but some are certainly better than others. Welcome to Bend!

Go to greatschools.net - this is the best website IMO. The majority of the scores are based on state test scores, I'd personally stick with schools higher than a 7 (which really narrows your search). Like previously mentioned, High Lakes is the best elementary and the junior and high school are the best as well. Unfortunetely, the cost of living on the west side is not for the faint of heart.

Default bend schools-opinion

Hi- I am a teacher from the east and i am relocating to Bend. I looked at "Great Schools" website too etc etc and really loved (once I visited it) the Three Rivers Elementary School. I have been teaching for 20 years and i felt so incredibly impressed with the staff and welcome I received there, when I went with my little girl. You really can't take test scores and websites like "Great Schools"into account only..... please visit the web page of each elementary school and visit neighborhoods and schools. We are moving to 3 Rivers in 2 years and can't wait. I currently live in a district and work for another district, which are supposed to be so great, and I have to say so much information you receive is a fallicy. Decide what neighborhood has the vibe you like and go with it. I look forward to my child going to school with others who want to live near the river and the mountain -and some of them will share my values in caring about those things. Good luck and don't let yourself get crazy about this stuff. Bend is so lovely, especially compared to the junk you see in the East or in California. You can't miss.
