Now I am not sure my bi-racial kids and myself (a Black woman) would even be accepted based on what I have read. We are use to racism as we have lived in New Mexico the last 9 years and are full aware of biased attitudes. In some regards I prefer the south where at least it is overt racism. However, the bigger concern is that the comments are micro-agressions against people of color. If anyone has a different experience, in particular people with bi-racial kids, I would be interested in hearing your comments. I have to make a decision about an application to BR. Thank you...
If this can serve as any consolation, I am a Black male that has also made derogatory remarks about at least part of the Black community in BR. I am not a BR native, but I attended SU for undergrad and the majority of the maternal side of my family is in or around Baton Rouge and New Orleans. I also still have plenty of friends in the area. As a result, I have seen first-hand how ridiculous things are in some areas. I have also seen where there is a lot of wasted potential in the area as well. With the amount of educated and gainfully-employed people in the area, one would think that there would be more mentoring programs, community involvement, neighborhood clean-ups, and so on.

I honestly don't think that you and your children would have any issues solely based on your being Black or them being biracial. Just be prepared to root for the Jaguars and Tigers
