The 1890 Pittsburgh Alleghneys were 23-113, but if we limit ourselves to the 20th Century on, the worst Pirate clubs have been....

1952 42-112 .273
1953 50-104 .325
1917 51-103 .331
1954 53-101 .344
1985 57-104 .354
2001 62-100 .383

2010 53-99 .349....they are on a pace to lose 105 games, but if they can rally, they still have a shot at being the second worst team in franchise history. They need to lose seven of the ten to end up 56-106, the second most losses in team history.

Well the magic number is now (5) for the Pirates to reach that 106 loss total.

The Mariners won tonight, so the Pirates have clinched the worst record in MLB this season.

The Pirates are sort of choking in the clutch here. They have won eight of their last eleven, their best stretch of the year. However, they have lost 101 games, making them the worst team yet in this eighteen year era of failure. Five games remaining, but they would need to lose them all in order to have the second most losses in franchise history.

I thank the Pirate organization for all that they did this season on behalf of validating this thread's premise.
