There are several major problems Baltimore needs to address as a big city:

1) The people. People keep saying 'build this, or build that'. But if you keep the same ignorant, illiterate, uneducated, nuisance of a people, it is still an unattractive place. The people are really scum. I have no problem with Barack Obama or Bill Cosby like folks living next door to me. I just don't want DMX living next door to me. And it's not just Black people as portrayed, Baltimore has a serious White trash problem too. I've never seen a city where a bartender or bails bondman are treated like celebrities. Losers are winners in this town. This white, hillbilly, hick-like, slim shady wannabe worthless garbage you see hanging out has to go. Price them OUT! Make Baltimore so expensive for scum like them, that they have to jump in the harbor and die!

2) The crime. There is no excuse for this. The city needs a Giuliani like mayor that cracks down on these thug-wannabe criminals harder than we crack down on Al Qaeda abroad. They are the 'real threats' to Americans, not some caveman in Yonderstan. When I am walking at night, or in my home alone, or parking my car on a vacant street, I am not worried about Al Qaeda. I'm worried about these scumbags we turn a blind eye to or make excuses for justifying their sub-human like behavior.

3) Public Transportation. In order to get educated, professional, likable people who actually do something useful for our society and are not a nuisance to neighbor with, into the city...you have to have a good public transportation system. These people can't really walk everywhere because they have to be harassed and threatened by trash the city won't get rid of, and the police can't crack down on.

4) The system. Instead of wanting dilapidated, deteriorating properties to be bought up by some 'evil' developer who wants to spend HIS money to improve the properties in an economically sensible way via massive development so he can make a profit to hopefully one day do it again....the city wants broke, section 8 families who are currently living off of our money to somehow pull money out of their butt and purchase these pathetic conditioned homes to live in. And that doesn't work, because it DOESN"T MAKE SENSE. So the houses just sit there. Yes, some suburbanites slowly purchase homes and renovate them, but this takes YEARS!!! Homeowners aren't going to just MOVE INTO A WARZONE! You have to let developers fix up the homes nicely, so it is attracted to young professionals who want to live in the city, but aren't ready to buy yet. Once the neighborhood is dominated by them, the families will be ready to pay top dollar to move in and live in those neighborhoods. It's a simple process that has worked in just about every major city!

4) The local government. We need a straight up revolution to get rid of these folks.

Bullet Point (1) - You are right. There are a lot of hicks and rednecks in and around Baltimore. Most are hardworking, others not so much. I certainly will not argue with you when it comes to that. I'm surprised I haven't ran over any yet going about my daily routine.

Bullet Point (2) - Can you think of any better place to commit a crime than in Baltimore City? There is no accountability, and no one if office with any sort of backbone.

Bullet Point (3) - In 90% of cities a viable transportation network is an asset. In Baltimore, public transportation has a way of ruining many decent neighborhoods. Unless your going to and from work, school, or live in the city, public transportation within Baltimore is essentially worthless except for the poor.

Bullet Point (4) - I don't feel like writing an entire paragraph stating my opinion.

SantaFe, I think the reason public transportation ruins Baltimore is because it is practically FREE! Instead of taxing me to death on real estate, why don't they raise the cost of public transportation to normal rates around the country? The more expensive it becomes, the less people who shoudn't be using it will use it. Using the train to go to Lexington Market so you can loiter outside of it all day is not what it should be used for.

You are right in many aspects. Why would your typical suburban family opt to pay $15+ to park at a garage, over the cheaper, and more cost efficient $1.50 each way on the Metro. The reason being who is going to want to get off at any of the stops between Penn North and Reisterstown Plaza. I can't imagine any tourist or family wanting to explore Baltimore by getting off at Rogers Avenue. It's just easier to drive in this town, than take public transportation and dealing with every third word being F this and F that. Some people will puchase a subway ticket and just ride up and down it all day.

If I'm going downtown I rather find street parking in Canton, and walk or drive over to Fells Point, Mt. Vernon, etc. than rely on public transportaton. It seems as if most people in Baltimore feel that way as well.

Numbers101,

Are you familiar with Baltimore filmmaker John Waters? If not, you should check out some of his films. It's somewhat telling and insightful.

1) You are part of the problem. We do not want you in Baltimore, feel free to leave at your earliest convenience.

2) We do not need a "Giuliani" type of Mayor, that will be the quickest way to anarchy in Baltimore. The population will not stand for it. Commissioner Batts understands this and the small initiatives he has taken are working to an extent.

3) Public transportation could use improvements but also note that we have the "purple bus"
(FREE TRANSPORTATION) and etc. that are currently in service and catering to certain areas in Baltimore. I could name many neighborhoods in Baltimore that would love to have that type of bus provide transportation in and out of their communities, be thankful.

4) Sounds like you are attempting to bait into a class warfare argument. However, we do need to clean house in city hall.
