"We're pushing the engines to produce as much power as possible," he said. "We're right on the edge. Sometimes they fail, and that's why the containment ring is there."

If I'm not mistaken, this is the first passenger fatality in Southwest's history.

That is true, but two other incidents resulted in death.

Southwest Airlines flight 1763 August 11, 2000. A 19 year old stormed the pilot door and was inadvertently suffocated after being subdued by force involving 6-8 passengers.

Southwest Airlines Flight 1248 December 8, 2005. The airplane slid off a runway at Chicago-Midway while landing in a snowstorm and crashed into automobile traffic, killing six-year-old Joshua Woods who was a car passenger.

Yes, I do recall the sad incident in Chicago, which is why I specified "passenger" fatalities. I did not recall the incident in August 2000.

Is this level of engine damage possible from bird strikes?

They were at 32,000 feet which would be unusually high for birds. Not much oxygen at that altitude level.

I only like isle seats. If something happens I don’t want to be crawling over others. I had only one bad flight so I guess I’m lucky.

So it's not just in the movies. People do get "sucked out"
