So I bought a new SUV and noticed that my father struggles to get into the car (his hip was fractured). Running boards appear to be helpful. I saw some 'after market versions' and I was wondering if they are hard to install myself.

Have you ever installed them yourself? What kind of time does it take?

Otherwise, I will just cough up the $900+Tax.

I'm pretty sure they come with instructions. They're so easy to install a caveman can do it.

There are a lot of companys that have a direct bolt on running board or nerf bar. They will bolt on using the existing holes in the frame. I did mine in an hour. I would advise you to get a friend to help you level them.

Just buy one that bolts directly to existing hard points. As said above a Geico customer could install them.

I've installed running boards - but it was some time ago.

The ease or difficulty of installation will depend largely on what kind of SUV you have, and what kind of running boards you're wanting to install. And sorry to disappoint, but it's not quite easy enough for a cave man to do.

If you're going to use them to step on, make sure you get the running boards that attach to the frame, not just to the lip of the body panels.

I had those single steps on an E350 van. The kind that they use screws to tighten against frame. I am a bigg guy and every time I stepped on it it would bend way down and I always felt like they would break but never did. They were cheap and might be okay for a person in the 150 to 200 lb. range though.
