Not that this is advised , but couldn't the driver have lied and said the registration payment is in the mail and he's waiting for the tag to get mailed to him?

In California you're allowed to drive for a short period after the registration expires to account for mailed-in renewals (I think...).

In Colorado you have to have the new tags on 30 days after the old ones expire. At 31 days, you can get a ticket.

In Nevada, there is NO grace period.
You MAY avoid a ticket IF you have renewed online and are waiting for the sticker [this can and WILL be verified by the cop]

Grace Period.. sounds like when they allow you to say Grace, when they pull you over for expired tags?

Some states might give you a grace period, I'm not sure which ones, but I know Arizona doesn't, in fact if you register your vehicle even a day late, they'll tack on a little penalty.

I still think there are two issues.

1)How long past renewal date can you renew with DMV and not have to pay a penaty fine to renew.

2) How long past renewal date will a police only warn you and not give you a ticket.

I know this varied state by state.

That is good news.
He has been responsible with his driving for 2 years so he deserves that.

The problem with "grace" periods is your always going to have the people who push the limit. "If I have a 2 week grace period, than why not 15 days?" , type thing. Bottom line...the bill is due when the bill is due. And yes, we all forget a bill or two at some point in time, but it is a lesson learned.
We were in Laguna Bch, Ca. a few weeks ago...our parking meter expired at 3:17...we got back to the car at 3:38...and yup...a $36 ticket..Pi$$ed? You bet! But...we didn't get back in time...and we knew what time we should have been due back. Lesson learned...don't push the metermaid on time!

Wow the founding Fathers must have been clairvoyants the way they covered registration of automobiles in the Constitution.

Try not pleading guilty or no-lo and having the states I have lived in not be able to do anything. Every state I have been in not answering tickets or giving them a bunch of horse**** run around conspiracy theory answers will get you a loss drivers license and maybe an auto impound as well.
