I have a tricky situation. Got a new car - the financials are in both mine and my boyfriend's names, title, insurance and registration in his name only.

Now I am planning to move to another state, he stays here for now. How do I transfer everything under my name? Where do I start? The more I'm trying to understand, the more confused I get.

We are now in NY, moving to NC.

The answers to your question are basically SIMPLE. His name is on the TITLE, Registration and Insurance mean that he is the LEGAL owner of the Vehicle. You have NO claim to said vehicle other then mutual agreement as to paying for said vehicle. You would have to transfer title/registration as if you were purchasing the vehicle from him or say from a private person or from a used car lot. This can be done simply by visiting your local Motor Vehicle Dept with papers and BILL OF SALE. In most states (I believe) the Title may show Purchase (owner name) and LEIN holder (bank.finance co) in some cases. I have always paid CASH for my cars and NEVER financed. Stefhen
