I actually got an IDL the first time I knew I was going to drive in Europe. When I presented it, I was told to put it away as it was not needed. All they needed was my Alaska driver's license. I rented a number of times after that and all I ever needed was my Alaska driver's license. Too bad AAA didn't tell me I didn't need their IDL. When I post something of this nature, it's because I have actual experience to back it.

You may not need for renting a car but it makes life easier should you be stopped by the police or get into an accident if the country you are in doesn't have English as it's first language.

From the Austrian Embassy in Washington DC:

Driving a Vehicle

Quote:
2) Driver's license:
An international drivers permit (IDP) is required for Austria. It can be purchased through the AAA club and is valid for one year. When driving abroad, carry both your IDP and your state driver's license with you at all times. An IDP serves as an officially and internationally recognized translation of your license.
Granted, any cops at a normal road checkpoint there are only going to be making sure you have your autobahn toll sticker on your windshield and once they see that, they'll waive you right through. But if you get into an accident or have another moving violation, then it gets significantly worse for you without an IDP.

Probably about the same time they became an international agency that could post traffic control devices.
