It'd be much better than the idiots around me on the roads. It'd also open you to spend attention elsewhere, like monitoring your car.... just kidding. I know everyone's just going to pull out their phones.
There was an article I read once that used the reversible commuter lane on the 15 in San Diego to test the capabilities of an automated highway system with a fleet of computerized Buick LeSabres, and it worked well overall. The computers can keep the cars closely spaced (tested all the way down to about half a car length) to keep drag resistance down and keep capacity high, and at a constant speed to improve traffic.
Then, of course, BMW has their 3er that can drive the Nurburgring by itself that Top Gear fans may remember Jeremy Clarkson took for a spin. It could drive the car right on the numbers.
I agree i'd rather be in control, how will these cars react to human error, when your driving you have to defend yourself against all kinds of hazards, plus driving would become boring, nothing like the feel of a peppy 5 speed on a curvy highway
Those would be great for people who just barely know how to "operate a motor vehicle" at best.
