You could also call your local chevy dealership and speak with someone in the part dept. They should be able to confirm what you are looking for.

6 replaced 3 in everything but manual transmissions and power steering.

From what I've read online especially on Impala forums, they use Dex VI instead of III.

DEXRON-VI can be used in past model vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission/transaxel in place of DEXRON-III.

Every iteration of Dexron is better than the last but is also backwards compatible. Use VI.

I just ran into this myself. I sent my Son to the auto parts store for III and he came back with VI, said the counter guy told him that was now recommended for my Caddy. I was skeptical so I did some research and it does replace the III and mixes right in.

It also says on the bottle it replaces the older ones, except for one that I forget, maybe IV.

Dexron III was a huge disappointment for GM. They came with it and thought it would be good for 100K miles. They even advertised about it and got people to wait too long to replace/flush their transmission fluid. When then realized Dexron III (3) didn't even last 1/3 the speculated 100K mile mark, then quickly engineered Dexron 6 which supersedes it.

As others mentioned, Dexron IV is what you want to use and it is OK to mix it with Dexron III but you would probably be better off flushing the old stuff out in a proper way and change the filter too.
