I agree with the O-P. I liked Toyotas back when the Corolla and Celicas were rear wheel drive. Those GT-S models were super nice IMO. I was at the Toyota Dealer back in the spring of 1984 to buy a new Celica GTS. It was super good looking, super slow, and super expensive. I ended up with a new Mustang GT. It was 3K cheaper and was pretty quick for the time.
although old sports cars were badass in their day and still look really badass (some even sounds extremely good), they all drive like dirty baby diapers compared to todays modern sports cars. every time i see one i just admire and think about what they were back when they launched. im talking pre power steering, anti-lock brakes etc.

Such cars have to be appreciated for what they were compared to the competitors made at the same time. While slower than the Mustang you chose, they were better built and could corner better. Imagine comparing a Civic or Corolla or Sentra SE-R to Cavalier, Escort, or whatever Dodge had at the time.
I think I need more coffee to think of some more though but those were cars that some have modern version but went down market in performance and bang for buck fun factor or were one of high end all out sports cars that totally disappeared from the compared modern day segment that would of competed in
