^ A cracked hose, in the EGR System, could certainly set off a whole list of error codes.

Egr issues usually are a hose or hose fitting issue. There are some further tests to see if the value functions. Usually a good voltage meter will help.

I recent re-did ALL the vac hoses and fixed my limp mode (for $10 in hose)

A cracked one can drive you CRAZY trying to find.

Default Here's what they need to do

Remove and replace the EGR vacuum switching valve
Remove and replace the EGR valve
Remove and replace the vacuum modulator EGR valve

All for a grand total of $636.83. With after market parts $447.80.

The guy changed the cracked hose. But that isn't the problem apparently.

ECM has failed
EGR gas temperature sensor circuit open or shorted to voltage
EGR gas temperature sensor connector is damaged (check pins for damage)
EGR gas temperature sensor has failed
EGR valve is stuck in closed position
EGR valve vacuum hose is disconnected or leaking

And there are about 50 or more reported fixes.

I asked the guy at O'Reilly's if he knew of a good mechanic in the area, he gave me a name. I went. One guy seemed eager to quote me $500 (the EGR issue requires replacement of 3 parts because you can't just replace one without replacing all 3 in order for it to work properly). His partner told me to leave the car and he would try and pinpoint it for free. He did say a hose needed to be replaced and showed me, it was cracked where it joined the valve. He said if air got in there it could cause a problem. But he will call me later with what he finds out.
I am really not sure who told you all this crap about that code. It's simple EGR carbon deposits issue. Locate EGR, remove, and clean with carb cleaner.

Also, run a can of Seafoam through tankful, for 2 consecutive tanks.
I bet plugs need to be replaced too, along with air filter. Sounds like neglected car - and a good car, btw.

Some time ago I had an 02 Focus - with the Zetec engine - brought in. Running poorly, all kinds of codes (though no limp mode) being thrown. Owner was kind of terrified.

From experience, I knew it was almost certainly a little $10 hose between the engine & firewall. Had to remove a few things to get to it, but it was a cheap fix, and I sent away a VERY relieved and happy young man.

It's amazing how big - or small - something like this can be.

Welp, the check engine light went off this morning. The car is actually running better. Do you think the EGR stuff still needs replacing? Or was the guy full of poop?

Oh wow, didn't see this. Should I still do that, even though the CE light is off now?

Yes, it should still be cleaned. I'm sure the light will be back on eventually, a lot of time it'll come on after prolonged highway driving, that's when the EGR valve opens up (or attempts to).
