BTW guys, my 160 HP Accord VTEC laughs at your high-altitude claims. It really isn't an issue I'm worried about.
Well if you're happy to spend $15K on a 10+ year old vette that runs 15's in the 1/4 in Denver and 16's up in Summit County then I guess you won't be disappointed.
Your 160 HP Accord is only 160 HP at sea level. In Denver you'll be down to 136hp. 115hp in Summit County and 93hp at the top of Pikes Peak or Mt Evans.
Engines are just air/fuel pumps. The higher you go the less O2 there is in the atmosphere. Your car monitors this with it's 02 sensor and adjusts the air/fuel mixture on the fly. Unless it has a air compressor (tubro) the only thing your engine can do is reduce the amount of fuel it injects in the cylinder. Physics doesn't care if your engine is a VTEC , or a 5.7L Push Rod V8. It's still loose around 3% per 1,000ft in altitude gain.
Go ahead and laugh all you want, but that's not going to change the facts. In the end it's your money and your 'fantasy'. But that's just the thing, high powered naturally aspirated cars are nothing more than a Fantasy in Colorado. Their chest thumping performance literately vanishes into thin air.
Mazda Miata. You can get a 2008 or 2009 with a manual for that price. Great on gas, nearly bulletproof reliability and a blast on twisty roads.

Of course, but how much is it going to cost you to turbocharge a vette? Could you put together a reliable c5 with forced induction for $15K?
Don't get me wrong, I think they are beautiful cars with unbeatable bang for the buck. If I ever live somewhere that's < 2,000ft above sea level I'd be mighty tempted by a c6.
But here in CO all the good drivers roads are up in the mountains where a c5 is going to be pretty lackluster at 240hp or so.
I don't particularly like the throttle response of turbos either but they are a necessary evil here.

Come on guys!!! If his fantasy is to buy another basic sports car then let him be. Not everyone wants to buy off-road vehicles and ultralight aircraft.

My toy car would be something like:
buying an old volvo 240 for $1000 and putting a bigger turboed volvo engine in it and taking it to the track to drift or something. Thats a toy, something that you can have fun in and youll have money left over and it wont be a big deal if the thing gets wrecked. Simple and fun, a nice project and it doesnt have to be pretty, also if you have a kid you can teach him a thing or two. But to some that would be a boring fantasy.
