I've been debating whether to get a helmet cam for when I'm out on two wheels. The one I'll probably get is the Contour ROAM2, runs about $200 from Amazon. You can still get the Contour ROAM for about $120-ish. The ROAM2 records at 60fps at 720p I believe, and is waterproof. The ROAM is 30fps. It's a small camera, good for mounting on a helmet. I think there's a flat mount in the box if you want to dash mount it.

The Roam 2 does not loop record. You need a true DVR camera that loop records. What I mean by that is after the memory card fills up, the camera deletes the old video and writes the new video. Most of the American action camera's do not loop record. You need to really look at some Korean or Chinese DVR black box camera's. Look on Amazon and search for dash cam. You will find all sorts of dash cams and helmet cams from all over the world.

From all the recent meteor tapes, it seems like a lot of people have dash cams. I just think that's kind of odd. I've used one from time to time to video trips in the mountains, and stuff like that but not day to day driving. But I suppose in today's society, it's just another added level of protection.

In Russia (and other countries) the need is there due to a combination of factors. Insurance fraud (idiots jumping in front of your car, etc), the "normal" accidents (easy proof, less hassle with insurance companies), corrupt police officers and so on. They actually make a good bit of sense here in the U.S. as well as recorded footage is increasingly being used as evidence in a variety of circumstances. They are relatively inexpensive now too and storage is dirt cheap.

GoPro isn't a good choice, dedicated dash-cams have features such as automatically committing a portion of video based on user input or accelerometer data, or otherwise doing first-in-first-out; and keeping a log of location from GPS muxed with the video data in some cases. With a GoPro you'd have to remember to blank the memory manually etc.

I used helmet cams when riding my motorcycles but after one stupid accident, I realized it'd be stupid not to have it with me every single ride. My commutes are only about 5-6 miles each way but still, you will be amazed with how many close calls I had.

With the cars, there will likely to be a collision between vehicles but still, considering their low cost or ease of operation, it would be a worthy investment imho. They are the best eyewitness one can have!

I bought two (one for me and one for my sister) priced around $28-$40 from this site and they work really well. All you need to buy extra is a memory card since they typically do not come with one.

I mainly care about HD resolution (1080), wide angle (120+) and sensor/night vision features which almost all of them seem to have.

Old thread and all but as long as it's been resurrected... Consent laws vary from state to state, but even in those jurisdictions where consent of all parties is required, that consent is only needed in situations where the parties have a reasonable expectation of privacy. There is no reasonable expectation that your driving conduct on public roads remains private. Now, if you recorded the conversation between the parties after the accident and tried to use that as evidence, then you may run into privacy issues.

Wow, I missed that!

Oh well...

But assuming they are still on public road (or on the side of the road), why would you run into a privacy issue?
I am not likely to drag the camera with me to record people's conversations after the incident but I don't see any problem using the camera to capture the damages from outside the vehicle. If the camera captured any background audio during that time ....oh well!

My goal would be to use the video capture as a visual evidence.
I couldn't care less about the audio recording unless it would help the case (hard braking or some other mechanical sound).

I would suggest anybody and everybody get a dash cam if they can afford it.

I own two FineVu CR500HD's that record in full 1080p. THis is a full DVR sustem and loop records 24/7.
Finally, I think someone nailed it on this thread. Reading with mild interest, my concerns were (would be):

- Must be fire-and-forget: I have no time or interest in dealing with batteries and memory cards. Nor does anyone else with a day job. (check: connected to some sort of ignition-on hot-lead, presumably, much like my Escort radar detector).
- Continuous loop (check).
- High-def, within reason (check: that's about as good as it gets, current state of the tech?)

Seems like there are some other interesting features, too, including GPS and other modes.

$300 each, roughly (assuming 32gb memory card, wiring, suction cup, etc.). Ain't cheap, exactly.

I drive Seattle roads daily and don't see any dumber behavior than usual, but YMMV and it's a free country.

Just because you're in public or in a place of public accommodation doesn't mean everything you say is subject to public scrutiny. Even in such places you have a reasonable expectation of privacy, at least with regard to your conversations, if you conduct your conversation such that only you and the other party can hear it. On the other hand, if you start shouting so that others around you can hear you. your expectation of privacy quickly diminishes.
