No, it's not different strokes for different folks...it's just a bunch of people who have enough $$ to buy a BMW and don't know what they're talking about...The cars are called bimmers...end of story.

You would not be expected to know. These people you hear say beamer are the people who buy BMWs for the image, not because they know anything about their cars. They probably don't even know what the letters BMW stand for. And they probably don't know how many cylinders the engine has, how many valves the engine has, nor the displacement.

But now that you do - you will distinguish yourself from the uninformed by using the correct name!
