Had a Galant, at 150K miles (13 yrs)was going through engine oil faster than gasoline. Had to sell it to an enthusiastic HS kid with legal disclaimer that it won't pass inspections. It also needed suspension work and some other nick knacks, not worth it to repair.
Had a Corolla that at 155K miles and 16 yrs of age was falling apart. The differential was groaning (common problem in that generation), needed a whole new muffler system, the shocks & springs were completely shot (any minor road imperfection and the tire would hit the bumper), the engine ECU and carburetor were shot too-would not pass inspection, so sold it as a parts car.
The other cars, I was smarted and would off load one year before this stage.
1979 Saab ran it until I had to have someone come and haul it off on a loader. They gave me $50 for it and I got a fair price. Muffler was shot, brakes were non-existent, it refused to start, yada, yada.
I have a few vehicles but the eldest of the pack my 1998 Ford Expedition is the favorite. Well over 270,000 miles and still kicking; on one leg but still kicking. Time to replace the engine also she turns off anytime I make a left or right turn! Yet I can't pass her over.
What you drove yesterday to the yard is what I'm driving today.
Amen kid! You'd be surprised how many the local junkyard gets in that are refurbished and resold. Some several times over before they finally come back in for good. My stepson has been driving a '99 Sable he bought for $750 two years ago. Needed a radiator, water pump and some other things to fix an overheating problem but once those were done he's had no trouble since. Our second car (minivan actually) was turned in for junk for the simple reason "Pap" died and nobody wanted the darn thing. $1,000 for an 82k vehicle that at the time was road ready and has basically been problem free. I have dozens of similar stories but you get the idea.
i had an 88 Jetta for about four months don't know how many miles were on it, the speedo cable was broke, lets just say i had to keep my hand on the shifter because the 5th gear had a tendency of disengaging while driving. Also the seat started rocking due to the lack of floor boards
I read on a blog somewhere (can't remember) of someone who claimed to have driven a Toyota Prius to over 300,000 miles until it was totaled.. had pictures of the mileage on the dash at over the 300K mark.
Had a 1980 Chevy LUV with way over 200,000 miles. I got it from my dad and he got it used with 45,000+ miles on it. I sold it and the owner after me ran it into the ground.

I take it you didn't live anywhere near snow. Around here those things were rusted hunks within 3-4 years.
Southern California. Around here there are still some LUV's running around.
Heh -- haven't seen one around here in decades.
