Ok, so there has been some debate amongst some techs I know bout not having your gas cap on. Some say it can do some damage to your engine or some sensors...the main one I've heard techs blaming O2 sensor failure on it...while others say its just polution to the air if you leave it open.
I take the side with polution only, I don't see how it would really cause damage to any components.
What you think? If you think otherwise, do you have any website to back up your thinking cuz I'd love to get to the bottom of this.
No damage to the car at all. The gas cap is there to prevent fuel vapors from escaping into the air. They are a required part of the emissions system, hence the tripping of the CEL when it's not on, but it will cause no damage whatsoever.

Agreed. The worst thing it will do is cause the check engine light bulb to burn out prematurely from being on all the time.
My dad's 07 accord just shown a check fuel cap indication on the odo display. Once the cap is tighten, the fuel cap display will go away in a few days.

I'd sure never want that to happen. How would my car fail inspection if the light was burned out?
Somehow, I suspect that the very last thing in a car that would fail would be the bulb in the light that alerts the inspectors to fail the car. Is there any thing else I can do to make that light bulb burn out, besides dismantle the whole dashboard and remove the bulb? There is probably a backup warning system that warns that he CEL bulb is malfunctioning.
