In Texas, the buyer has to pay any applicable sales tax at the time that he transfers the title and registers the car in his name. There are no other fees, just the title transfer fee, the sales tax, and the applicable registration fee for the coming year, and show proof of insurance. Vehicle inspection not required if the car was previously plated in Texas, the inspection sticker is good until its expiration date.
The seller has no monetary responsibility at all, except to sign and date the "seller" space on the title and hand it to the buyer. It is highly recommended, though, that the seller receive a signed bill of sale from the buyer, to relieve the seller of any liability for future use of the car up until the time that it is legally transferred to the new owner.
The new owner may request that you do not fill in the space for purchase price or date, but he will need to fill those in himself before he can title or register it. Seller's signature is the only mandatory part, and does not need to be notarized or witnessed.
So if my registration is out this month, and I want to sell it next month, registration will have to be paid twice for the truck within one month? Once from me, once from them?
I'm not sure. Different states have varying regulations. I don't know whether Texas rebates per-diem a registration fee if the registration is cancelled before expiration. Some states will do that, and some won't. (Michigan won't) However, in Texas, plates stay with the vehicle, and the new owner can drive for the remainder of the year before he is required to change the registration.
It might also be possible to just buy a 30-day temporary tag (probably no more than ten bucks) to get you through the month.
In Louisiana go to a tag transfer place, or if you got plenty of time the DMV, let the buyer get a new tag or temporary tag and make sure the seller(vary important)gets the old tag and turns it into the dmv or bad thangs can happen,(ask me how I know this)
Correct. But go to your local county tax office and get the form for transferring a title. They will not do crap if you do not fill out their paperwork and correctly. Take the buyer with you to get it done that day.
