I am gradually changing my driving style from aggressive to totally defensive.
Since moving from NJ to NC I have noticed no matter what speed you are driving, lots of NC drivers tailgate but if you are doing 5 MPH over the limit they will not pass you, they just sit back there 20 ft from your bumper.
With so many addicted to texting I am afraid if I have to slow down for the occasional deer crossing I am going to get rear ended by one of those teenage or soccer mom tail gaters.
So I have decided it is better to be the following car instead of the leader ( nobody is giving points or cash for being the lead car).
So from now on I will continue my 5 MPH over the limit and as soon as I get a tailgater I will slow down as much as possible until they make the pass.
I can handle people flipping me the bird all day but what I can stand is to be rear ended.
I noticed that when I got older, I started and braked a lot less like a jackrabbit, I didn't play the radio as loud, and I cared less whether my car turned the heads of girls walking home from school. I also didn't wash it nearly as often, got rid of the vanity plate, and lost the beads hanging from the mirror.
l had a raccoon tail (which I had won at a carnival) on a fake antenna on the back of my bike. In addition to the baseball cards clothespinned in the spokes.
I did once have the license plate number 82-228, and I put the plate on upside down, so it read 822-28. The police made me turn it back right side up, failing to appreciate my irony, and apparently considering such a reversal to be a serious endangerment to public safety and civil order, which they were committed to uphold.

I too live and drive in nc (charlotte) I have avoided several accidents because my safe speed gave me time to make an evasive move because of other drivers. You cant stop them from tailgating or using the friggin phone but you can GIVE THEM THE FINGER BACK... Its funny but it seems that the same sobs that will speed past you and then cut you off even if you are 5 over the limit will ride your bumper with their brights on at night if you are going 5 under the limit.
To a certain extent you have to adapt to local custom. Some places have very fast traffic flow, some very slow. If your driving is too far out of sync with local habits it will cause a problem.

Are you suggesting that we have to adjust to texting tailgaters?
I am not a slow driver I have a 600HP Mustang but I will not tolerate tailgaters.
I don't think driving 5 MPH over the limit is out of sync. Just pass me and don't tailgate that's all I want.
Simple you slow down until they have no option other than passing you.
I'd rather be behind the idiot and watch him/her hit somebody else.
It's pretty obvious that we cannot stop the texting idiots so the best solution is to get behind them.
I already tried the option of staying far ahead of the cars behind me but the State police did not like my method so they fined me $200
huh. i found NC to be a pretty decent state in terms of freeway driving. people are generally conscious of some sort of lane discipline (left lane for passing, otherwise stay right), speeds are consistent (i could actually use the cruise even when traffic gets busy), and folks actually understand and use a turn signal.
now if i could just get SoCal drivers to do even one of these..........
