The classic British roadster was the inspiration behind the Mazda Miata. In many ways, the Miata perfected the roadster. Should a British car company try to bring back the roadster?
There barely IS a British Automobile industry today that could re-introduce the roadster.
But the roadster platform has already been resurrected by the Miata and BMW.
If there was any British manufacturer to build them, then I can't see why not.
I can only think of two British companies, Jaguar and Aston Martin. Either has the tech to make a quality roadster. GM and Ford use to have a classic roadster in the form of the original Corvette and Thunderbird, one sporty while the other a cruiser. Somehow Mazda got the formula just right. Small, light weight, affordable price, good handling, RWD, and OK trunk space even with top down. GM's last two seat roadsters looked good but were heavy and with bad ergonomics. It'd be a great car for someone who has access to winding mountain roads.
Aston Martin does make a roadster although it's just a tad beyond most people's ability to buy one. I sat in one at Bobby Rahal Jaguar,Rover, Volvo this past Summer.
Jaguar was bought by Ford and they did have a roadster model, but they've now been acquired by TaTa Motors in India who've come out with a whole new line of cars...not even a drop top in the line-up.
Why wait for some manufacturer to build one. Prices on classic British roadsters are down during this recession. The last of the true British roadster built would be the TR-8 with a Rover V-8 under the hood (bonnet). Or if you really want to be traditional, you can find really nice TR-6s all over the place at reasonable prices.
