The old point system also rewarded consistency. I forget the year, but Terry Labonte has zero wins and was the point leader for a lot of the season, but got beat out by Gordon because he racked up the wins. The chase is a joke.
Both points systems reward consistency, go take a look at JJ's record from last year. The problem with the pre-chase point sys is it rewarded consistency too much. It was said on more than one occasion a driver could finish 4th every race under the old points and would win the championship. A driver finishing 2nd place + leading the most laps under the old points sys would be awarded as many points as the winner. Doesn't give the 2nd place driver much incentive to make a last ditch charge at first place.
I'd like to see a few more points handed to the winner. I have no problem with the system rewarding consistancy, but there should be a big advantage to coming in 1st.
I am not sure what else can be done about ending under yellow. If there are a lot of cars competing for position at the end, there are bound to be accidents. The implementation of the green-white-checker has helped some, since it resets the field. The downside is that it also wipes out any distance advantage a driver might have built up on a longer run. Still, it allows racing for the checkered flag. Beyond that, what else is there? Let the green flag fly as cars pile up around the track?
Sounds to me like someone has no clue of what they're talking about!
I was excited about the changes Nascar is making to lure back some of us old-time fans that they've lost in recent years. Now they've addressed my main bone of contention (finishing under caution) and you're saying that I'm whining about everything? Geesh. Give me a break!

It's funny you mention that because long before the chase started, long before the GWC, races finished under caution. If caution occurred with 3 laps to go and it took 4 laps to clean it up, end of race. And it was that way for the most of the 20+ years I've been watching the sport.
And don't get me started on you "old-time race fans."
Well, here we go. Race #1 is the non-points Bud ShootOut (the former Busch Clash, now with new entry requirements. Apparently, if you have a pulse, you're in the field!)
In general, the race was ok. They got a little racey out there, but it's sad when the race is only 73.5 laps long. One race so far this year and we can't get a race to the finish.
Sorry Nascar, you still don't have it right!

Look at your first post, complaining about finishing under caution. Sure sounds like whining to me.
You're right old timer. Someone doesn't have a clue.
