I have been a big Jeff Gordon fan since he first started in NASCAR, definitely a bigger fan of him than NASCAR.
When all is said and done and numbers added up he has to be one of the most consistant drivers since he has been in the big leagues, year after year win or lose he continues to have top ten or or on the edge seasons.
Constant rules changes are being made to keep the fans happy and in the seats........but as the seasons moves on desperation and craziness will overcome performance and driver ability, it should be something like bumper cars as the season closes for those desperate to get a ticket to the dance by way of a win.
Just my opinions........like everyone above has said congrats to the 24 team!
For a driver like Gordon he is at a pivotal time in his career; he runs well, yet doesn't win as much as before. Makes the chase, but doesn't really contend for the cup.
The question arises if it is driver, crew chief, or team? Because at his (career) age a dry spell can turn into a drought, a drought that can turn into a string of bad seasons, a string of bad seasons can turn a good/ great driver into an also ran.
I would say looking at Gordon the last of last year into this year;he isn't a also ran at all. In fact he is one of most consistent drivers on the team in that period. Harvick clearly shows that NASCAR is a team thing as always but a driver is needed that is competitive. That the teams are much more equal is shown by just looking at results. I believe he is now third on all time list.
i think what happens to a lot of veteran drivers as they get later in their career is that they just go through the motions. they are generally still competitive, but they dont have the desire to push hard to win races anymore. i believe jeff gordon is trying to break out of that mold that he has been in for sometime now, and if he can do it, then perhaps more of the older drivers will realize that they can do it also.
If he were to win another championship I would not be surprised if he announced his retirement afterwards.
