Hello! I'm a 22 yr old, female planning a trip to Oz for 2 -3 weeks during Christmas and New Years. I studied abroad in Sydney two years ago and I loved it and I will spending a good amount of time there during my trip. However, I wanted to visit other cities in Oz. My friend and I are going to the Gold Coast/Brisbane for a few days. Would Cairns/Port Douglass be a good place to visit for a few days? I just don't want to spend all my time in Sydney. As long as I'm in Sydney for Christmas Day and New Years Eve, then I'm good!

I'm not a fan of Sydney. Have been to Cairns and PD a few times, while its a beautiful part of the world....its very touristy and pricey esp PD. But since you are only planning a few days there, it is well worth it. Gold Coast and Brisbane are two places I like and recommend.

What is there to do and see in Cairns or Port Douglass besides The Great Barrier Reef?

There is an animal and wildlife reserve well worth going to, can take a tour (Its between Cairns and PD). Have taken a fishing boat out in PD, with a guide, you can catch some fish you will not see in many other places. There are crocs in the waters but its totally safe.
Also I like to play the golf courses, not sure if thats for you or not. Some good seafood restaurants in Cairns and PD.
Cairns really doesn't have alot, that you can't do elsewhere.

Daintree rainforest, Daintree River cruise & surrounding areas like Mossman Gorge.

3-4 days there would be plenty.

Cairns also has the rainforest- riding the train to Kuranda, having a look around the town and coming back via Skyrail is a good day out. Skyrail is a cablecar that skims over the top of the rainforest and has several stations, where you can get out and have a little walk round.
