If you're just asking what divides north and south Austin and ignoring central Austin, as a native Austinite I say it's the river. You can't define north and south using 183 or Anderson Lane as a divider without stating what central Austin is. That'd be like stating south Austin starts at Ben White or William Cannon.

South Central Austin is between Town lake and 290/Ben White.
Or alternately, call all of the above Central Austin.

North Austin is between 183/Research and 45 at north end.

South Austin is between 290/Ben White and future 45 on south end.

ding! ding! ding! Correct sir! Tell us what's he's won, Bob...

jokes aside, that was pretty complete and spot on.

I see central austin as being bordered by 183 north, 290 south, 360 west and 35 east. But, that's just me.

An expansion that extends the west boundary beyond MoPac; if you consider Loop 360 as western boundary of central Austin, then I would consider 183 as the eastern boundary as it kinda circles back to 71, and connects back to 360, creating in essence an "inner loop" around the central core of Austin.

In the future, Toll 130 along with Toll 45 on the north and south sides can connect via an extended 620 to create an "outer loop" around Austin.

Whatever you want it to be....some would say it begins just north of the triangle dist past UT campus..some say the river....some say where the corporate campuses off Mopac begin.....
or is it a state of mind?

183, like IH 35, is a north south thoroughfare so how can North Austin be North of 183 if the hwy runs north and south instead of east west??

Because while it sort of runs north and south it also sort of runs east and west.

You will note that 183 and IH35 cross each other.
