Hi there,

I've read this forum on and off for a bit while researching moving and have found some very helpful bits and insight. Thanks in advance.

I'm originally from Arizona and moved to Seattle roughly 3 years ago. When I left Arizona it was between Seattle and Austin and ultimately I chose Seattle because it was such a drastic difference climate wise and much more urban than Tempe. Seattle has served it's purpose but I HATE the weather and the overall pretentious vibe of the city.

I visited Austin at the end of February to check out the city once more and confirm that it's where i'd like to put down roots. It is. I stayed with some friends who gave me a more in depth tour of the town and had a few informational interviews set up to get a feel for the design industry which is my field. I'm a jr. level designer (1-2 years) and would like to find something before I move if possible (don't we all!?). Initially my goal was to be there at the end of August, as the summers here in the northwest are what make living through the crappy winters worth it, but, i'm not under a lease and decided it would be in my best interest to start looking now to increase my chances.

Do you have any advice for applying for jobs when you're not in the city? I don't want to approach the employers as if they're the only reason why i'm moving. I'm moving regardless. I'm not above taking a job as a barista or anything else while i'm getting my feet in the door, but i'd imagine that when UT is back in session even those jobs are hard to come by now, or at least much more competitve.

I appreciate any and all help, thanks!

-Jonathan

Not to put down the Austinites, but things here aren't too professional in the city itself. I actually have talked to neighbors in which they have to DRESS DOWN in order to get a job here. You being an out of stater, puts you in a large minority here. For every Texas plate I see on a car, I'll see two being from out of state.

My best advice is to have a good strong resume and don't move here just yet. You'll want to be hired before considering to move here. Moving from Seattle to Austin is quite a change, it's much smaller, and Seattle being a coastal city, be prepared for allergies and dry days.

My friend works for a government agency here, and recently put out a $12/hr job on craigslist and had over 700 replies. So, as stated before, definitely make sure you can LAND a good job here before moving here. Many people I know are out of work currently, and if you've heard of a dream job here, don't think others haven't heard about it either. So, perhaps if you're currently living well off in seattle, those grey days aren't so bad after all?

Hope that helps! Good luck in your transition!
