Hi Everyone,

I was just wondering where people work. With so many new faces in Austin and Central Texas is seems like all we really are building is more retail space and more shopping. Are most of you new to the area working in retail?

I know some of the major employers like AMD have hired a few people but I am not clear on where everyone works and what they do. Austin's main employer use to be the government. Now I don't know where everybody is working.

Thanks.

Dell still employs a huge percentage, I believe, and the University is a major employer (in the top 3, I believe) - it's where I get my paycheck!

The Statesman had a chart on the top companies hiring in Austin, and government related jobs (state & federal & UT) were in the top 3 or 4 spots. Dell was around #5 on the list.

Here is a chart on top overall employers from the year 2000. Obviously, it is out of date:

The only reason I know this is because I'm looking it up in the 2006 Austin Relocation Guide. The Top 20 Austin Employers are:

1. The State of Texas
2. Dell, Inc.
3. The University of Texas at Austin
4. Austin ISD
5. U.S. Government
6. City of Austin
7. Seton Healthcare Network
8. IBM Corporation (Austin Research Laboratory)
9. Freescale Semiconductor (formerly Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector)
10. St. David's Healthcare Partnership
11. Round Rock ISD
12. Travis County
13. Austin Community College
14. Solectron Texas
15. Leander ISD
16. Applied Materials
17. National Instruments
18. Both AMD and SBC are tied for number 18
19. Texas State University - San Marcos
20. Pflugerville ISD
