Most likely taking our first trip there in Austin, come around Valentines Day. Just curious on what's the weather like around that time of month. Also the whole plan for the trip is to come and see what Austin looks like in person. Thanks in advance!

I have a friend coming up to run the Austin Marathon that weekend and she asked me the same thing. Average lows are in the mid 40's and average highs are in the mid 60's. That said however, the record low and high for 2/14 is something like 12 and 85. So, your best bet is to check the National Weather Service forecast the week before you come.

Don't know if you have or need a hotel, but most of the downtown hotels are booked that weekend because of the marathon. You might have luck finding one in a different part of town though.

Was it last Valentine's Day that it was snow and freezing rain or was that '06?

This time of year can be quite iffy. If we get an ice storm it usually happens in February. We also have days that start out in the upper 60's and drop 10-20 degrees as the day goes on (cold front moves in).

Bring layers of clothes so you can layer up or strip down as the weather demands then you won't get caught short.
Example: t-shirt with long sleeve shirt with sweater/sweashirt with jacket. Dressed like that you are prepared for any wide swings in weather.

I think I can safely say to leave your swimsuit at home (unless you belong to the polar bear club).

It's funny that you should ask this question today because as I sit here typing up this post, my front door is slung wide-open and I'm in shorts and a T-shirt. There's a touch of humidity and it hit 80 degrees.
However, last year about this same time they closed down the airport for several days because of ice. The whole city shut down because it was so cold and icy.
One of the great things about the weather here, is that www.accuweather.com can do a fairly reliable job forecasting. Check it a few days before you come. Right now it is forecasting 55-65 during the day and down into the 35-45 range at night from Feb 13 - 15, with a chance of rain.

The weather here is crazy. On Valentines day it could be 20 degrees with the whole city shut down, or it can be 90 degrees with record breaking temperatures. Or it could be a nice 70 degree spring like day. It really depends.

There will be romance in the air. Also a lot of smog as all the roadside flower stands are clogged with thoughtful husbands and boyfriends buying flowers and a card as an afterthought on their way home. Then sitting in their idling cars with pensive looks on their faces at they summon up some romantic creativity while scribing their adoration on the fresh new card, using the dashboard as a writing surface. That scene always cracks me up.

If men were honest...
"Honey, I'm home! And as I was driving past the grocery store parking lot I saw a big flower tent and a huge crowd of men in the boarded up Albertson's parking lot, and remembered that it's Valentine's Day and that I love you! So I stopped in and dropped a $10 bill. Don't these smell lovely?"

It's not to early to start thinking ahead guys. Reservations, a really special gift, a card selected after more than 30 seconds of consideration...

Steve
